About Unterwald
Hi there,
About me, what can I say?
My journey with computers began in 1984 with an Atari computer. Back then, I was captivated by the potential of these machines, even in their earliest stages. With my Atari, I ran a bulletin board system (BBS), which was a precursor to the internet as we know it today. It was an exciting time, though working with technology back then required a lot of patience and ingenuity.
For those unfamiliar with BBSs, they were platforms that allowed users to connect over dial-up modems to share messages, files, and other resources. This was before the World Wide Web, when the idea of a global internet was still a distant dream. Setting up and maintaining a BBS was no small task, but it was incredibly rewarding. I’ll never forget the screeching sound of a modem connecting—a hallmark of early computing.
Of course, the technology was far from perfect. Uploading and downloading files was an excruciatingly slow process. Even a small Atari file could take hours to transfer. Yet, the joy of connecting with others and being part of this pioneering phase of digital communication outweighed the frustrations. It was a glimpse into what the future could hold.
Fast forward to 1999, and I made the transition to using a Microsoft computer. My first experiences were with DOS, a command-line operating system that required users to type specific commands to perform tasks. While DOS was functional, it wasn’t the most user-friendly system. Then came Windows, and what a relief it was! Windows brought a graphical interface that made computing far more accessible and enjoyable.
Having used the GEM (General Environment Manager) interface on the Atari, I could appreciate just how revolutionary Windows was. Suddenly, tasks that once seemed complicated became intuitive. Windows represented a giant leap forward, not just for me personally but for the computing world as a whole.
In 2000, I registered the domain unterwald.com, and it’s been my digital home ever since. Owning a domain was, at the time, a bold step into the digital frontier. The internet was still evolving, and websites were much simpler than they are today. Unterwald.com has grown and changed over the years, but its purpose has remained consistent: to be a space where I can share my journey and my passion for technology.
Today, the site is a personal blog with affiliate posts. The focus is on tools and WordPress extensions that I’ve personally used and liked. I believe in sharing what works, and my recommendations are based on real experiences. It’s a small way of contributing to the online community and helping others navigate the vast world of technology.
Reflecting on the past 40 years, it’s incredible to see how far technology has come. From the humble beginnings of the Atari to the sophisticated devices and networks we have today, the pace of innovation has been astounding. I’ve learned so much along the way, but one thing remains constant: there’s always more to discover. Technology is ever-evolving, and staying curious is the key to keeping up.
For me, working with computers has been more than just a career or a hobby—it’s been a lifelong passion. Each new development brings excitement and opportunities to learn. Looking ahead, I can only imagine what the next 40 years will bring. Whether it’s advances in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, or something entirely unexpected, I’m eager to be part of the journey.
So, that’s a bit about me and Unterwald.com. I hope you’ll visit often and find value in the content I share. If you’d like to connect, feel free to drop me an email—I’d love to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by, and here’s to exploring the ever-changing world of technology together!
